Detailed Article About Phloen Chit Neighborhood in Bangkok

Ploenchit (Phloen Chit) is a prestigious central district in Bangkok’s Pathum Wan area, served by Phloen Chit BTS station (E2) on the Sukhumvit line and bordered by Wireless Road. Home to the Central Embassy mall, many embassies and diplomatic missions, and luxury condominiums, it sits between Lumphini and Benjakitti Parks as one of the city’s most exclusive addresses.

Overall History of Phloen Chit

Phloen Chit neighborhood is a living testament to the city’s evolution with roots dating back to the early 1900’s or reign of King Rama VI. The main road in the neighborhood ‘Thanon Wittayu’ was built in 1920 and is the home to Wittayu Palace.

In 1922, Thailand’s first radio transmitting station was built on Witthayu Road, which earned it the nickname ‘Wireless Road’.

The building of Wittayu Palace was completed In 1925 by Prince Rangsit. The Prince had studied in Germany and was an avid collector of ancient artifacts. The beautifully designed European style mansion still safekeeps his extensive collection today, although it is not yet open to the public.

In 1947, The British Embassy in Bangkok was established on Wittayu Road, where they had built an enormous regal estate. This stood until as recently as January 2018, when it was sold to The Central Group. It was announced as the biggest land deal in Thai history. The UK government received nearly ฿16 billion for the property.

Since then the area has continued to grow. In 2014, Central Embassy Mall by The Central Group was completed (its extension on the previously British owned neighboring land is still under construction).

Soon after in 2017, The Park Hyatt Hotel was completed. This brought both Hi-End retail and accommodation to the area. Surrounding land prices have since continued to soar, with land in the area sparse and difficult to acquire.
